Events
As the national Hub in photonics manufacturing, we are responsible for providing leadership to the UK’s academic and industrial communities.
Our role is to increase awareness and engagement with the ways photonics manufacturing research is tackling Grand Challenges, improving people’s lives and boosting productivity.

One of the most powerful ways to engage stakeholders and represent the community on a global stage is to play an active leadership role in a range of events.
Conferences and exhibitions
Our academics constantly share their leading photonics expertise on the conference and trade show circuit.
Since 2016, we have participated in 106 conferences, trade shows and workshops around the world, giving keynotes and plenary talks, presenting papers and exhibiting technology demonstrators.
Despite the 2020 COVID-19 restrictions, we continued to share our research at the some of the largest and best-known international events. Recent highlights include Professor Sir David Payne’s plenary at SPIE Photonics West in San Francisco, exhibitions such as the Materials Research Exchange and Tyndall Award 50th birthday, and the SPIE Photonex + Vacuum Expo Digital Forum.
Engaging with government and industry
We continually actively engage with government and industry.
We hold regular Industry Days to share the latest innovations in photonics manufacturing.
During recent times, our online voice has been more important than ever. Through social channels, newsletters and the press, we initiate debate and provide thought leadership on live issues, such as UK investment in research and development, stimulating the local economy and encouraging diversity in the technology sector.
Horizon-scanning
We use our knowledge and insight in the field of photonics manufacturing to help drive future innovation in response to key societal challenges.
In 2020, Hub Investigators joined internationally renowned professors and Early Career Researchers in a series of ‘virtual’ photonics horizon-scanning workshops organised by the Photonics Leadership Group.
The workshops culminated in a report, Future horizons for photonics research 2030 and beyond, with a foreword from Carol Monaghan, MP and Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Photonics and Quantum. The publication, funded by the Hub, was disseminated to stimulate engagement from government, funding agencies and industry to shape and support future innovation strategies.
